Delimitation is the process of redrawing the boundaries of electoral constituencies to ensure fair representation based on population changes. In India, this is done by a Delimitation Commission, whose work is based on the census and legal provisions made by Parliament.
UPSC Prelims Pointers:
- Done to ensure roughly equal population representation across constituencies.
- Related to Articles 82 and 170 of the Constitution.
- In India, the Delimitation Commission is an independent body.
- Its orders generally cannot be challenged in court under Article 329(a).
- Delimitation has been frozen for Lok Sabha/Assembly seat reallocation until after 2026.
- UPSC trap: distinguish between delimitation of boundaries and reservation of seats for SC/ST.
