A Uniform Civil Code (UCC) refers to a common set of civil laws governing matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and succession for all citizens, irrespective of religion. In the Indian Constitution, it is mentioned under Article 44 as a Directive Principle of State Policy, which says that the State shall endeavour to secure a uniform civil code for citizens.
UPSC Prelims Pointers:
- Mentioned in Article 44, under Part IV (Directive Principles of State Policy).
- Deals with civil matters, not criminal law.
- Often linked with gender justice, equality before law, and secularism.
- Not a Fundamental Right; it is a Directive Principle.
- UPSC trap: do not confuse UCC with Uniform Criminal Code or with religious freedom under Articles 25–28.
